Perfect Weakness: Finding God in Our Imperfections

“Give God your worst and He gives you His best. It’s an unfair trade—but we call it grace.” —Ron Edmundson

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” —2 Corinthians 12:9

Grace is undeserved and unmerited.

More often than not, I bring my leftovers to God. I don’t mean to—really—but I find myself offering Him my leftover time, energy, and resources when the day has drained me of my best. My heart yearns to give Him more, and He sees this intention beneath my imperfect offerings. For this understanding, I am deeply thankful.

The spaces between who I am and who I long to be—these are the gaps where grace flows most freely. After decades of walking with God, I’ve learned that He doesn’t wait for my perfection. He meets me in my mess.

If it weren’t for grace filling the cracks of my relationships—with children, parents, friends, and strangers—where would I be? I shiver to consider the results if my finite abilities were all I brought to the table.

Instead, I witness grace. I have brought to God all that I am—my triumphs and failures, my strength and weakness, my certainty and doubt—and He reaches into the very place where I live.

He brings grace to fill my emptiness. He brings love to heal my hardness. He brings second chances when I’ve exhausted all my own.

I have often needed those second chances. I believe generations of women before me would link arms in acknowledgment of our shared human shortcomings. At this stage of life, I’ve stopped expecting perfection from myself. Instead, I’ve learned to look for God in the gaps—those spaces where my ability ends and His begins.

The beauty of growing older in faith is recognizing that the cracks in our lives aren’t flaws to be hidden—they’re channels for grace to enter. Like ancient pottery repaired with gold, our mended places often become our most beautiful features.

I will continue to grasp the opportunity for second chances as time marches on. I am a woman who still wrestles daily with herself, but I am created by God and called for a purpose that doesn’t diminish with age. I seek His hand upon my days and smile at His love pouring over me with grace—not just daily, but moment by moment.

The wonder isn’t that we stumble in our imperfections. The wonder is that in these very gaps, we discover God waiting, ready to transform our leftovers into something beautiful. This is grace—finding God in the spaces we thought were too broken for beauty.

What gaps or imperfections are in your life that you’ve been trying to hide or fix on your own?

What might happen if you invited God’s grace to flow freely into those spaces today?
