The Gift of Imperfection : Finding Beauty

As I stood in front of the mirror this morning, tracing some of those pesky fine lines etched by both laughter and worry alike, my reflection looked back with hair much different than I had known, a neck that looked like it belonged to someone else, a few more pounds than my frame should be carrying, and scars which were evidence of hard things, I was reminded that these ‘imperfections’ tell the story of a life well-lived. For decades, we’ve chased an unrealsitic idea of perfection -in relationships, finances, education, and yes, even in the reflections that peer back at us from our own mirrors.

There are days we study the one looking back at us and ask ourselves is THAT really me?

What if instead or yearning for a reflection other than the one we see,, we chose to see the very things we’ve spent years trying to hide or change as some the greatest and most beautiful parts of us?

Friend, as you and I navigate this glorious midlife season of life, I believe it’s time for each of us to rewrite our narrative. The gift of imperfection isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a freeing truth that can transform how we see ourselves and the world around us.

Wishing for a “Do-Over

What if instead of wishing to roll back the years and have a “do-over” we explore why embracing our so-called flaws might just be the missing link we need to unlock a deeper, richer, and more authentic version of ourselves?

We’ve raised families, built careers, and navigated countless challenges. Each experience, whether messy or beautiful, has left its mark – not just on our hearts, but often on our bodies, hearts souls, and in our daily lives.

Remember when you and your work-bestie met a challenge with no small of amount of grit and grace? The work we have done may have contributed to some of those smile lines. The children you’ve nurtured, they’ve given you both gray hairs and great joy. That dream you chased with a never give up attitude, even when it seemed impossible? It taught you that you were braver than you ever knew and challenged you in ways you never expected.

Imperfections are not Flaws

Our ‘imperfections’ are not flaws to be hidden. They are badges of honor, testaments to our lives fully lived.

When we choose to embrace them instead of rejecting them it can change everything.

  • Authenticity Breeds Connection: When we let go of the exhausting pursuit of perfection, we open ourselves to genuine connections. Our vulnerability becomes an invitation for others to be real. It draws them close. They feel safe. In a world of carefully curated social media, authenticity is both refreshing and inspiring.
  • Wisdom Comes from Experience: Those worry lines on your forehead? They’re evidence of problems solved, and hard things face head on. Our experiences – good and bad – have equipped us with priceless wisdom. When God sends others into our pathway, we have a chance to speak life, encouragement and hope to a world that sorely needs them. You never know who might benefit from your hard-earned insights.
  • Imperfection Sparks Creativity: Perfect things don’t need improvement. It’s our quirks and ‘flaws’ that often lead to innovative solutions and creative expressions. That unique perspective you’ve gained, it’s a collection of creativity waiting to be tapped.
  • Self-Acceptance Leads to confidence: There’s an immense freedom in accepting yourself fully. Imagine the inner strength that we will feel when we stop trying to change or hide parts of ourselves!

Practicing the Gift of Imperfection

So, how do we practice and embrace this gift of imperfection? Start small. The next time you catch yourself criticizing a perceived flaw inward or otherwise, pause. Ask yourself: What story does this imperfection tell? What strength does it represent?

Challenge yourself to share something you’ve been hiding. Maybe it’s a skill you’re still learning, or a dream you’re afraid to pursue. Is there a relationship you need to prune away or pursue?

The following questions come from Ruth Haley Barton’s book, Sacred Rhythms.

  • How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?
  • How has God uniquely designed me?
  • What do I really want?
  • How badly do I want it?
  • Am I willing to rearrange my life for what my heart most wants?

Take a step.

Just one.

Then another.

A life fully lived – with all its messy, beautiful imperfections – is the greatest masterpiece we can create.

Here’s to being brave.
